Tomb Raider Legend is a return to form for Tomb Raider fans everywhere. Action combat, exploration, and puzzles. If you are one of the many gamers (un)lucky enough to have a job, or family commitments, then the chances are there will be times that you feel the need to seek advice or tips to get you through one of the levels. Or, if you are one of the 8 hours a day type, maybe you want to finish off those last few secrets or Xbox Gamerscore points.
Thats where Piggyback come in. The days of strategy guides being 'for losers' are over, as are the days of them being pamphlets produced by game companies as a way to make some money on the side.
The Piggyback strategy guide for Tomb Raider Legend is a wonderful tome, one Lara herself would be pleased to add to her library. The guide is brimming with content, from mission tips to reference tables and extras such as the making of the new Lara.
Lets start with the bit you buy strategy guides for - the guides. Each level has a clearly drawn and well labelled map, along with a description of what takes place in the area, divided up into distinct parts - 'Do this', 'You will encounter this...' . The events are broken down into manageable chuncks, and it should be easy to find the part you are having problems with and get assistance only with that part if you desire. Even before you get started with the game, the guide has something to offer - quick primers on moves such as jumps / pole swinging, and vehicular control, along with use of Laras' special equipment. They take you above and beyond the tutorial, and provide you with the tools you need to get through the missions with ease.
There are inset areas that offer tips for overall problems on the level, such as complicated jumps or difficult fights.
Secret areas and other specials are in a separate section of the guide to minimise the risk of running into a 'spoiler'.
The mission profiles describe the area, weather, and, for Lara fans, the outfit she wears in that mission. The guide has a complete list of all her outfits, weapons, and combat moves.
The obligatory cheat codes section is hiding away in the back of the book, and there is quite a large selection of cheats.
The Piggyback Tomb Raider Legend strategy guide is ideal for any style of gamer. I like to play games, and only use FAQs or walkthroughs to get through the parts I am struggling with. Before obtaining this guide, I found myself trawling GameFaqs looking for tips. The guides on sites such as GameFaqs are incredible, especially considering they are written by gamers in their own spare time, but they come at things from only one approach, and often the part you need help with is either ignored completely or brushed over. Not to mention, scrolling up and down some of the longer games is a nightmare, and for people who have their PC and their console in different rooms, having to move gets annoying!
The Piggyback guide is wel laid out, with cleary coloured and coded margins for finding stuff fast. The foldout cover has, along with a lovely picture of Lara, a controls quick-reference and a very easy to read map reference. It's a small innovation, but if you have ever lost your bookmarks in another publishers strategy guide at a crucial moment, then you will understand its importance. If you want to maximise your gaming, don't play without this by your side.
If you are not convinced, check out Piggybacks site, where you can download selected sections of the guide to see for yourself.
