Laser Mouse MX 1000
A review of:Logitech Laser Gaming Mouse by: Etali
Platform: PC    Publisher: Logitech
Rating: 9/10

The Logitech Laster Gaming Mouse MX1000 is a wireless laser mouse that claims to offer much more precision than the standard optical design.

It is an eight button mouse, having the standard two puttons plus the scroll wheel that can funciton as a middle button, a back / forth surf feature around the middle button, and three buttons on the left hand side designed to use for switching tasks in windows.

The design is primarily aimed at right-handed people, with the task-switching button at the top of a groove designed for the right thumb, but I found that I could still use the mouse comfortably as a left-handed person, although those buttons are not quite as easy to reach with the little finger.

The Logitech Laser Gaming Mouse is incredibly easy to install and set up - all you need to do is plug the receiver/charging cradle into a USB port on your computer, put the mouse into the cradle to charge for a couple of hours, then click away. It will function as a normal mouse immediately, without even installing the drivers.

If you do install the drivers, you gain access to those extra three buttons, and can configure all of the buttons on the mouse to do pretty much anything, from launching applications to running short keyboard macros.

A word of warning for gamers - the driver software in its default configuration (without changing the functions of any buttons) can cause problems in some games, as the games do not recognise when you use the middle mouse button, or scroll wheel. This is particularly apparent in some real time strategy games and in Black and White 2.

The Logitech Laser Mouse has a very good battery life, and can go for several days of prolonged use without charging if you are the kind of person who forgets to put it in its cradle at night. It also charges very quickly, taking a couple of hours at most. It has three lights on the side to indicate battery power, coloured green when they are charged, and changing to red when it is low on power.

The Logitech Laser Mouse is very light-weight compared to many other wireless mice, but still feels well made and very sturdy. My model has been dropped a couple of times and still works well, with no signs of wear and tear. The right and left buttons are not separate, but are actually moulded into the plastic body of the mouse, making for a very comfortable holding experience.

Response wise, on the default (low) setting the mouse is fairly slow to respond, but the driver allows for a lot of tweaking, and it is possible to get a very fast and twitchy pointer very easily.

I find the perfect test for a mouse is to log into Planetside (a massively multiplayer first person shooter) and attempt to rotate a turret 360 degrees. My previous wired mouse required several mousemats worth of space to perform such a feat, making for an unpleasant playing experience. Not so with this mouse, it glides around smoothly and quickly, but still allows for precision shooting.

As wireless mice go, this is one of the best I have seen so far - no need to change batteries, no hassle with the charging cradle as the mouse drops in and connects straight away. No problem with pairing devices or with it not being recognised without drivers - it is a pleasure to use.
