Wasted Potential
A review of:Spy vs Spy by: Etali

The original Spy Vs Spy from back in the 80s was a classic game - infuriating, but still a classic.

I was eager to see what the new version would be like. The logo, and even the graphics have retained the same style, and the music, whilst annoying after a little while, also kept the feel of the original.

Any affectionate feeling for the game started to fade once play actually began, however.

The game feels, and plays differently to the original, partly because of the controls and partly because it is in 3D.

The premise is still the same - you play either the Black or the White Spy and you attempt to recover important items while sabotaging the other Spys attempt to get the same things. You can either beat the other Spy up, attack him with various weapons, or place traps. It sounds like essentially the same game, and it is in principle, it just doesn't feel like it.

There are several modes in the game, including a story mode, a modern mode (with newer weapons), and a multi-player mode, which is probably the most fun.

The computer AI is rather dissapointingly dense, fighting other computer characters rather than the player, and falling into far too many traps, which detracts a lot from the single player experience. Played multi-player though, fans of the original game should be able to relive old times for a few satisfying hours.

There a lot to like about this game - the graphics, the amusing cutscenes, and some of the traps can be nice to see for the first time. The only downfall is the longevity of it.

It is a budget title, and for the price I would recommend old fans pick it up, but I wouldn't recommend it to people who have not played the original.
